Maria Petrou is a deceased Greek-born scientist specializing in digital image processing, artificial intelligence, and machine vision. Maria was a prolific contributor to scholarly publications and created several innovative image recognition algorithms while teaching at Surrey University and Imperial College London. The ‘trace transformation,’ a technique utilized in creating face recognition software, was one of her most important contributions to the image recognition area. Her research was focused on segmentation, making it simpler to recognize edges and primary forms in hazy images. Unfortunately, Maria passed in 2012 due to cancer complications; however, the legacy of contribution to advancing the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning is widely recognized.
