Joy Buolamwini

The Algometric Justice League

Joy is a worldwide pioneer in algorithmic prejudice concerning racial and gender discrimination in facial recognition algorithms. Her work has had a far-reaching impact forcing Amazon, Microsoft, and I.B.M. to stop services related to face recognition, acknowledging the technology is not yet suitable for public consumption. In her documentary film Coded Bias, Joy speaks about the social impact of artificial intelligence technology and her discovery that facial recognition does not see dark-skinned faces accurately. This led to her push for the first-ever legislation in the U.S. to govern against bias in algorithms. Joy is the vanguard of a burgeoning movement advancing through the non-profit organization, the Algorithmic Justice League. Her efforts have assisted the sector in enhancing its diversity of I.A. and future inclusiveness. Joy is also a researcher at M.I.T. Labs and a Board Member of the College of Computing. O.M.S. Ambassador to Africa at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
