Ellen Hildreth

Wellesley College

Ellen is an inventor of the Marr-Hildreth algorithm and esteemed Professor of Computer Science at Wellesley College, where she specializes in computer vision and perception. Ellen is well known for co-inventing the Marr-Hildreth algorithm with David Marr. It is an image recognition approach for identifying edges in images. Ellen is also known for her research exploring human vision by creating computational models of visual processing and observations from perceptual experiments. Ellen’s work focuses partly on analyzing the three-dimensional structure and movement of objects in an environment by integrating cues such as image motion and stereo vision and using this information for the visual guidance of tasks such as steering a vehicle and catching a ball. Ellen is well recognized in her field, and Association for Computing Machinery awarded her an Honorable Mention for her thesis, “The Measurement of Visual Motion.”
