Danah Boyd

Microsoft and Data & Society Research Institute

Danah has spent the last 11 years at Microsoft, where she has focused her research on data quality and fairness, machine learning transparency, differential privacy, and platform responsibility. Danah’s work addresses today’s social and cultural disparities by recognizing the link between technology and society. The Data & Society Research Institute strives to identify and battle how data-driven technology infiltrates societal concerns. In 2007, she released an unconventional study on young people’s use of Facebook and MySpace. She showed that most young Facebook users were white and middle-to-upper-class, whereas MySpace users were mostly lower-class black teens.
